North America’s Premiere Christian Ballet Company Bringing Holocaust Story to Niagara Region

In Nazi-occupied Holland, two sisters named Corrie and Betsie ten Boom courageously hid Jewish people in a secret room in their home. Discovered, they were sent to Ravensbrück, a notorious concentration camp, where they experienced the greatest darkness imaginable—and discovered that even in the darkness, God’s light can still shine. Corrie ten Boom’s classic book The Hiding Place has been a powerful story of faith and forgiveness for nearly 40 years.

This May 5 at 7:30 p.m., the story of the Hiding Place is coming to the Lakeshore Catholic School Auditorium, 150 Janet St., Port Colborne, through the powerful artistry of Ballet Magnificat!, North America’s premiere Christian ballet company. The evening will also feature a special performance by Carolyn Currey of Soli Deo Gloria Ballet. Tickets can be purchased online at www.solideoballet.com/hidingplace or by calling the South Niagara Life Centre, Mon-Fri, 9-5, at 905-871-0236; leave a message after hours.

In keeping with the Hiding Place themes of hope, faith, and the power of forgiveness, the evening is being held as a fundraiser for the South Niagara Life Centre, a local donor-operated ministry that reaches out to all people, all ages, and all genders in crisis or emergency in need of counseling or practical and spiritual help. Spearheading the event are Rachel Starr Thomson and Carolyn Currey of Stevensville-based Soli Deo Gloria Ballet.

“We had the chance to tour the Fort Erie Life Centre back in November,” Thomson said, “and were really impacted by the work they’re doing. We’ve been looking for a way to support them, and when Ballet Magnificat! Omega offered to come to our area, it seemed like a perfect opportunity.”

Ballet Magnificat! Omega is one of Ballet Magnificat!’s two touring companies. Founded in 1986 by USA International Ballet Competition medalist Kathy Thibodeaux, their full-scale productions have toured the world. Ballet Magnificat! Omega recently performed Hiding Place in Israel, where they were able to share the story with Holocaust survivors.

Currey, herself a professional ballet dancer, expressed her excitement about the performance. “It’s a truly powerful story of hope and the love of God,” she said. “It’s going to be an unforgettable evening.”
